MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT Parris Island, S.C. - A Parris Island recruit who
died from unknown causes Thursday morning has been identified. 

Recruit Bret C. Moran, 18, of Bronx, NY, was assigned to Platoon 2105, Echo
Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion.  He was on his 57th day of training
when training personnel attempted unsuccessfully to awaken him at
approximately 2:30 a.m. Thursday during a field exercise known as the
Crucible.  He was pronounced dead at Beaufort Memorial Hospital at
approximately 3:38 a.m. Thursday. 

Recruit Moran enlisted in the Marine Corps at Recruiting Station New York on
July 22, 2004.  He arrived at Parris Island on September 8, 2004 before
commencing his training on Sept 11, 2004.  He was qualified as a rifle
marksman and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal. 

The Marine Corps and the Recruit Training Depot at Parris Island have
planned a memorial service in honor of Recruit Moran at 4:00 p.m. Friday in
order for training staff and members of his unit to honor his memory and
rededicate themselves in his name.  The Marine Corps and the Parris Island
community extend their sincerest condolences to the family and friends of
this recruit.

The cause of death is currently under investigation.
